So I am currently in my last week of pregnancy [hopefully]… and rumor has it that pineapple has helped many women naturally induce labor.
According to thebabycorner.com: Tropical fruits including pineapple, papaya and mango contain a proteolytic enzyme called bromelain. This enzyme is said to help to soften the cervix and therefore bring on labor. Very little research has been done on bromelain and pineapple; in addition, eating large quantities of pineapple is likely to stimulate the digestive system and may kick-start the uterus into action by that means. If you do try pineapple, consume only fresh pineapple as bromelain is destroyed during the production process of canned pineapple.
Whats the harm in eating a bunch of pineapple? After all they are one of my favorite fruits!
With the coconut milk craze I have been on the past few days, of course the first thing that came to mind was a piña colada. I also threw in bromelain’s other BFF ~ mango for some extra tropical sweetness.
Pina Colada Mango Smoothie
A thick, creamy, refreshing smoothie perfect for breakfast, dessert or a snack. This smoothie is packed with vitamins including: Vitamin C for antioxidant protection and immune support, manganese and thiamin for energy, and bromelian for anti-inflammatory, digestive benefits, and the possibility of naturally inducing labor!
Ingredients
- 1 cup light coconut milk (I used the canned light variety)
- 1 cup fresh pineapple
- 1 frozen banana
- 1/2 cup frozen mango
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract (coconut extract would be great as well)
- 1-2 tsp. to taste of sweetener such as agave, honey, or stevia (optional, but I thought it tasted better with a little agave)
- 1 scoop protein powder (optional, but I need my protein!)
- 4 ice cubes
Directions
Put all ingredients into your blender, and blend. Serve with a pineapple chunk garnish, straw, or a cute little umbrella if you have one

Yum, this looks so good and refreshing. I’m going to have to give it a try soon! I hope it helps to induce you! Come on Baby Hayden!
I’ve only had pineapple once since I had Cameryn and I think it made her break out in hives. I love frozen pineapple, it is one of my favorite snacks, especially when the weather is warm. I’ve been meaning to try it again and see if it does give her hives or not.
Also, grapefruit/citrus fruits I’ve been staying away from this past week as I think it might be giving her hives too! Such a bummer if I need to stay away from those foods, I’m going to try a citrus smoothie again today to see if she has a reaction. I agree with you that when I eat grapefruit, I don’t really get sugar cravings or cravings for sweets!
Mango has also been one of my fav snacks lately as well. I’ve been buying no sugar and no sulfur organic dried mango and it is so good! I don’t know who loves it more me or my dog! He follows me everyhwere begging for a piece of it!
I have heard of different fruits giving babies rashes before too… (strawberries and diaper rash) so thats too bad she has a reaction to those fruits
Their little tummies must be ultra sensitive. How did she do with the citrus smoothie you had yesterday?
I am not sure why but I have never really been a huge fan of dried fruit but I will pick up a bag of dried mango cuz I must be missing out! You make it sound so good!
I ate pineapple like crazy towards the end of my pregnancy, not sure if it helped but at least it was TASTY!
Hang in there girl, you’re almost there and soon you’ll be holding sweet Baby Hayden in your arms!!
Sooo excited for you!!
thank you!! I am so excited too!!!!
