“In a world where dietary choices are poor, environmental pollution is heavy, stress levels are high, and exercise is often a last priority, internal cleansing is more important than ever for optimum health.” ~ Dr. Bernard Jensen
Back when I had pretty severe acne (my unfortunate mistake eating too many nuts), Calcium Bentonite Clay and I were best friends. This type of clay specifically, is used to clean out toxins from your body. You can apply it as a face mask, body wrap, sprinkle some in a hot bath, or drink it. I have done all of the above.
When you use it topically on your skin you will literally feel your face pulsate – which is the clay removing the deep impurities from your pores as well as red blood cells coming to the surface of your skin increasing circulation and bringing out new skin cells. The clay will harden on your face, tightening your skin and making your facial muscles feel rather paralyzed as it dries – but remember you have a thick layer of CLAY on your face … don’t fret! After you rinse off the clay with warm water, your skin will be slightly red but it will feel refreshed, clean, and incredibly soft. I noticed a night and day difference – no more oil, my pores were much smaller, and once that slight redness went away I had beautiful glowing skin~ all toxins gently but efficiently sucked out!
To make your mask just mix the clay with equal parts raw apple cider vinegar. Use a non-metal bowl and utensil to mix. Stir into a paste. And apply to face. Leave on for about 10-15 minutes.

I also recommend drinking calcium bentonite clay to help with elimination. {Make sure when taking it internally to not eat or drink anything (besides water) for two hours before and one hour after}
The importance of this is that when bentonite clay is taken internally – the pull is SO strong, that it will pull metals & toxins that are in the tissues and bloodstream into the digestive tract, through the walls of the intestines… to be safely poo’d away down the toilet.
How does clay work inside the body?
According to healing daily.com: “{When} taken internally, liquid bentonite supports the intestinal system in the elimination of toxins. Bentonite eliminates every kind of toxin, including those from the environment, such as heavy metals, and those that occur naturally as by-products of the body’s own health processes, such as metabolic toxins. It’s hard to believe that the body produces its own toxins, but that may happen as a result of stress, inefficient metabolism, or the proliferation of free radicals. Liquid bentonite is inert which means it passes through the body undigested.
Bentonite clay is made up of a high number of tiny platelets with negative electrical charges on their flat surfaces and positive charges on their edges.
When bentonite clay absorbs water and swells up, it is stretched open like a highly porous sponge. Toxins are drawn into these spaces through electrical attraction and bound. In fact, according to the Canadian Journal of Microbiology, bentonite clay can reportedly absorb pathogenic viruses as well as herbicides and pesticides.
The bentonite is eventually eliminated from the body with the toxins bound to its multiple surfaces.”
Worried about clay inside your body not finding its way out?
According to aboutclay.com: The body has no problem ridding itself of the clay. Don’t worry about a tiny brick house being built in the middle of your colon. The clay assists the body’s eliminatory process by acting as a bulking agent, similar to psyllium fiber, sweeping out the old matter that doesn’t need to be there. It is not digested in the same manner as food as it passes through the alimentary canal. Instead, it stimulates intestinal peristalsis, the muscular contractions that move food and stool through the bowels. The clay and the adsorbed toxins are both eliminated together; this keeps the toxins from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

Now, even though I no longer have severe acne, I still use this about once every two weeks as a skin detox treatment. I would be drinking the detox once or twice a week as well, but due to being pregnant I am not quite sure of any risks involved so I have held off just to be safe. I’m not sure if I can start back after baby H is born because I will be breastfeeding, but I am going to look into it. My body probably really needs a good cleanse, and this stuff is the best of the best! If you are not pregnant, get yourself some of this stuff and start your detox!
xoxo Jennifer

I love this post! I have never heard of bentonite clay before and am now super intrigued. It sounds amazing and I can’t wait to start using it! Where do you buy yours? I’m wondering if our organic health food store would carry it or if I need to get in online. This stuff looks awesome!
I bought the dietary supplement at Sprouts (which is just like Whole Foods) it was in the vitamin section. And I found the actual clay at our regular grocery store- Ralphs (in the organic shampoo/face wash aisle), but I was shocked to find it there! I think it might just have been a lucky find. I know they sell it on Amazon. I think I paid like $6 for it at Ralphs? Not too bad! The kind you drink was like $15. And it doesn’t taste bad either… kind of reminded me of Pepto Bismal!
Hmm, let me know what the Dr says on this as a cleanse while breastfeeding. Maybe even just a heavy greens juice 3 day cleanse, but then again that may not be enough cals while BF-ing. As far as facial stuff, I’m a big fan of epicuran pumpkin apple spice peel and kate somerville exfolikate (do you think this is too many chemicals while preggo, mostly fruit enzymes but also Salicylic Acid?).
juice cleanse might have to wait too! just because you will probably be super hungry and want more than just juice… but I really don’t know?
The pumpkin spice apple peel sounds great I will definitely have to look into that one! And exfolikate sounds awesome too… but I did google salicylic acid bc I have heard not to use it while prego… and this is what I found..

Salicylic acid
This mild acid is used to treat certain skin disorders, including acne, and you can find it in a number of skin products, such as cleansers and toners. It can penetrate facial oils to get deep into pores and clean out dead skin cells. Salicylic acid is in the aspirin family, so it can also help reduce inflammation or redness. BHA, or beta hydroxy acid, is a form of salicylic acid and is used in some topical exfoliants to reverse signs of aging.
But salicylic acid is another no-no for pregnant women. High doses of the acid in its oral form have been shown in studies to cause birth defects and various pregnancy complications.
Again, doctors are being cautious by recommending that pregnant women avoid the topical use of salicylic acid. Small amounts applied to the skin — such as a salicylic acid-containing toner used once or twice a day — are considered safe, says Johnson.
But the concern is stronger about face and body peels containing salicylic acid. “This kind of ‘soaking’ in the ingredient is similar to taking one or more aspirin when pregnant,” she explains.
“More product used equals more absorption into the bloodstream,” adds Baumann. Always check with your doctor before having a peel treatment. Better yet, she advises, if you must have a peel, have it done professionally at your dermatologist’s office. A dermatologist will know how to do it safely during pregnancy.
What about using it as a topical treatment for a breast infection? I am dying over here and I don’t do antibiotic….although it’s crossing my mind. Thanks?
I meant the detox clay. Sorry!
Hmm… breast infection.. are you pregnant or breast feeding? What kind of infection? I am not a doctor so I can’t say for sure… but if you are breast feeding, breast milk is supposed to heal just about everything under the sun- so if I were you I would apply some extra breast milk to the area infected a few times a day. As far as the detox clay- I wouldn’t apply it in the mask form but I would definitely sprinkle some in a nice hot bath. Good luck girlie
Thank you for this post. I bought some of this yesterday at Whole Foods. I don’t know there was an internal product as well. I did the face mask last night. The directions say to use water or apple cider vinegar. I used water. What are the benefits if the difference in choosing to use the ACV?
I’m not quite sure- I have never made the paste before using water. When you used water did you feel your face pulsate? ACV is sort of like a mild toner if I were to compare it to cosmetics.
I do agree with all the concepts you have offered to your post. They are really convincing and can definitely work. Nonetheless, the posts are too quick for starters. Could you please lengthen them a bit from subsequent time? Thanks for the post.
@ acne treatment not sure I understand what you mean…
Is bentonite clay the same as green clay? I tried green clay for about 3 weeks some years ago and it didn’t have any effect. As a chronic acne sufferer (nearly 27 years) i am always looking for a vegan cure.
Hmmm you have me wondering if nuts are causing my acne. They’re about the only thing I have yet to try eliminating. I eat pb and other nuts pretty much everyday. How long did it take you to clear up after eliminating nuts?
Also I have the Aztec clay already. Can that be mixed w water and taken internally?
According the to the Gerson Therapy, nuts and dairy products can cause acne.
Did you ever find out of it is safe to take calcium bentonite clay internally while breastfeeding? I’m finding conflicting answers online… :/
