Wow what a busy weekend I had! Busy but fun! Last night the boyfriend took me out for date night. He took me to one of our favorite restaurants. True Food Kitchen in Newport Beach. And boy does this stellar kitchen know how to stand behind their name. Their foods are fresh and seasonal. Everything on the menu is nutritious and healthy.
There are quite a few options for special diets. I would say most dishes are vegetarian, some are vegan, some are gluten free, and they are all delicious! Everytime we eat at this restaurant, I try to order something different. I like to keep my tastebuds on their toes, whats better than a new yummy flavor on your tongue? :)
We sat on the patio so we could enjoy the beautiful light that the 5 o’clock shadow brings. We chose a table under an umbrella, and the seating only had one cushiony side, so we sat next to each other, on the comfy side. cute.
Because we weren’t drinking alcohol, we both started out with a double shot of expresso, and two waters with lemon.
At True Food, the soup has always been lovely, so we decided we would try whatever they were serving. It was a nice brown lentil soup, and it held up to TFK’s (True Food Kitchen) reputation. It came out piping hot and was topped with a dollop of bright green basil pesto. (sorry I dug in right away and forgot to snap a picture)
The boy ordered the Turkey Burger as an entree. The Turkey Burger comes with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado and mayo, and is served on a warm flax seed bun. As a side he ordered his fave – the famous Tuscan Kale Salad and Sweet Potato Hash.
I still have a hard time deciding on what to eat there, because the menu is filled with so many good vegan options. Lucky for me this restaurant lets you order half orders of two entrees, so you can try more stuff =) I went with two veg & gluten free salads: The Heirloom Tomato & Watermelon salad, and the Mediterranean Chopped Salad.
The Heirloom Tomato & Watermelon salad was a really nice change from the regular “mixed greens and veggie” salad I am used to. The watermelon was served in large 1 1/2″ squares of bright pink and yellow- the yellow watermelon could have been mistaken for pineapple! I have never seen yellow watermelon before, or even heard of it! The color made no difference in taste. They were perfectly sweet and juicy, and complemented nicely by the yellow and green heirloom tomato slices. The dressing was a mix EVOO and white balsamic vinegar. It was topped off with small gobs of goat cheese (unfortunately I forgot to ask for no cheese) crumbled cashews, fresh basil leaves, and sea salt & pepper.
I will definitely be ordering this again while these foods are still in season. I am going to make a post soon on my own version of this recipe. Stay tuned!
The Mediterranean Salad was brown quinoa served over a bed of organic spinach, topped with sliced cucumbers, chopped green cherry tomatoes, and 1/2″ squares of feta cheese, macron almonds, and drizzled with a champagne vinaigrette. It was decent, however I probably wouldn’t order this salad again. Maybe this salad didn’t win me over, because I was enjoying the Heirloom salad so much?!
We didn’t save room for dessert, but we usually don’t order dessert when we have already ordered so much food before hand. I am quite curious what their desserts taste like so maybe next time I will have to eat less!
With all that food, we managed to only rack up a tab of $47.56. Another reason I love this place. The food is organic, fresh, and isn’t terribly expensive. That is a rarity these days when dining out.
After dinner we went to see Planet of the Apes! FABULOUS FLICK! If you have ever owned a pet, I think you will agree. Must see!
Hope your weekend was as fabulous as mine! Tomorrow’s recipe is a post workout smoothie that is filled with all different kinds of fruits, a few veggies, and ALFALFA SPROUTS!
scary huh?~ haha I used to think so too. Do not fear sprouts, you can’t even taste them in the smoothie, yet you are receiving all the nutritious benefits! WINNING! Have a fabulous evening. I’m off to take the poochies to the dog park :)
What are your favorite whole food restaurants? What are your go-to meals? Do you like to order one entree just for you, or a bunch of little appetizers so you can have a little taste of everything?
